Winter break in Lapland with huskies

5 Days

A unique way to spend your winter break in Lapland with huskies: live next to the huskies for three full days and help our musher in her daily chores. The dogs will love to be cared for and petted and will happily take you out for a sledge ride in the unspoilt nature that surrounds our lodge.

In the other days, you can enjoy the most exciting family-friendly activities, such as a husky safari, a visit to a reindeer farm and a snowshoe walk with dogs. Those of you who feel a bit more daring can dip in the frozen waters of the local river, or walk on the frozen sea. You will be always accompanied by one of our guides, who will tell you all about this amazing and often overlooked area of Lapland.

After a full day on the move, nothing is more welcome than a typical sauna. And ours is surely one to be enjoyed: its traditional stove ensures smooth steam, and the hot tubs located just outside make for an extraordinary wellness experience. In the evening, our cosy restaurant awaits you. We normally cook Italian specialties, as that’s where we are from, but a stay in Lapland would not be complete without some of the typical dishes of this area.

A winter break in Lapland with huskies is a great way to reconcile yourself with nature and yourself, in an area full of hidden jewels, off the beaten tourist track. It’s easy to reach us but you won’t feel it as we are close to a protected wilderness area.

Enjoy your winter break in Lapland with huskies at the Old Pine Husky Lodge!

Itinerary

We welcome you at the Kemi or Rovaniemi railway station or at the Kemi-Tornio (KEM) or Rovaniemi (RVN) airport. Transfer in a private vehicle (30min to 1h30min, subject to supplement) to our Old Pine Husky Lodge. This rustic lodge lies within a beautiful tall pine forest and is built in a historic farmhouse setting. You will stay in a double or family room. The lodge has a total of 6 rooms, and a cosy hall where you can relax and make coffee while you wait for the Northern Lights. A fridge, freezer and microwave oven are available. Toilets and showers are shared, while sauna and hot tubs are located in a separate building, around 20 meters away. Our husky yard is just a few steps away, and you will be able to live like a musher during your stay, taking care of the dogs and petting them and playing with them as they deserve. Upon arrival we will serve you dinner in our Husky Café Pizzeria, an authentic Italian place in the heart of Lapland. We also serve typical Lappish fare, which you will be able to taste during the stay. After dinner, given the right conditions, we can look for northern lights in the magical pine forest. You may use our wood-heated kota to warm up if you feel cold. Upon need, overalls and shoes are available for rental.
A buffet breakfast is served in the restaurant. Afterwards, we will enjoy a husky sled safari, lasting 5-10 km. The length of the route may vary according to snow and ice conditions. At the end of the safari, you can take a lunch break (lunch is not included) in our restaurant, or simply have coffee and grill sausage in the kota. You can always help with the dogs, who will surely appreciate. There are opportunities to rent snowshoes or do a guided walk nearby. While it gets dark, you can relax in our wonderful old-style sauna, heated only by wood, and follow with a fantastic wellness experience in one of our hot tubs. Do not forget to bring your swimsuit, an essential in Lapland. Dinner and northern lights.
After breakfast, we drive you to Arkadia Farm (around 50 minutes) a real reindeer farm, run by a local family and located in the municipality of Simo. You can get to know these wonderful animals and learn everything about their life. You can feed them lychens, and (for a little extra supplement to be paid on the spot) try a short round on a sled. Later, we can have coffee or a hot drink and cake in the wonderful kota, next to the open fire. In the afternoon, we will visit Kemi, the main town in the area. We go through the old harbour and try, upon the right conditions, a walk on the frozen sea. Optionally, you can visit Snowcastle 365, (entrance fee not included - opening times to be confirmed). Later, we drive back to the lodge, where you can relax and perhaps help with the dogs – they will be grateful as usual! Our sauna will be ready by 5 pm, and dinner a couple of hours later. Another chance to see the Northern Lights awaits afterwards.
After breakfast, we prepare for our ice experience. The Akkunus river flows around 2 km from the lodge and can be easily reached with the help of snowshoes (approx. 1h walk). Our huskies will take part in the walk with us, and you will be secured to one of them through a belt. We reach a place where we can light a fire and set up our fishing camp. The river ice is thick enough to hold us. We dig a hole and wait to catch a perch, or pike. Those of you who feel adventurous can dip in the ice – bring your swimsuit! This uniquely arctic experience is carried out in full safety and is known to bring health benefits. We eat a snack and later return to the lodge on our snowshoes. The activity lasts around 4 hours. There are no toilets nor warm places. Duration may be shortened in case the weather is very harsh. The afternoon is spent relaxing and caring for the dogs. The sauna waits for you like every day, and a typical dinner follows. There will be time to observe Northern Lights afterwards.
Breakfast. Transfer to your departure point – (optional). End of the tour.
A hearty breakfast is served at the lodge. Afterwards, it is time for adrenaline! We will transfer to the village of Kukkola (1h drive) and jump on our snowmobiles in a tour lasting around 2h (requires B driving license and normal physical shape). Every snowmobile has a driver and a passenger – we will stop midway for a driver change and a hot drink. At the end of the safari, we will visit the old fishermen village of Kukkola, which has been perfectly preserved till today. Museum buildings sit right next to the houses where locals still live, in an atmosphere that brings you back in time. In Kukkola we will meet a local fisherman who can tell you all about the fascinating fishing traditions. We return to the lodge and have dinner before trying to see the northern lights.
