In the month of May Lapland changes its face.
Long and dark winter months suddenly make space for all-round daylight. Snow quickly melts, and so does the ice on the river. This is the best time of the year for kayaking or canoeing on the Akkunus river, that flows close by our lodge. The rapids are generally easy to tackle. In case you do not have experience or want to bring your children, the calm Kemi river is the best bet.
Kayaking is a beautiful and elegant way to explore the water and enjoy the wildlife and the landscape, also suitable for children.
If you are into adrenaline, take the wild rapids of Kukkola on a raft, descending almost 20 m in 3500 m! This exciting experience on the Tornio river, located about 1h drive away from the lodge, takes around 1h, and requires a group of min 6 people. The rapids are tackled first on the East side (easy) and then on the West side (more challenging). We end the experience with a visit to the ancient fishing village of Kukkolankoski and a snack.
